Mexican Auto Sales Reach Eight-Year High in 2025
Publish date: 2025-06-05
Mexico’s automotive sector recorded its highest sales volume in eight years, reaching 593,284 new light vehicles sold between January and May 2025, according to data from the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (INEGI). This figure represents a 0.9% increase over the same period in 2024, despite broader signs of market deceleration and external uncertainties.

In May alone, 119,961 new vehicles were sold, a 0.4% year-over-year decline. However, this was still a 10.8% increase over April 2025, marking the highest monthly growth rate so far this year. “Sales in May exceed that of the same month in 2019 by 17.1%. From January to May 2025, the market is 11.1% above 2019 sales levels,” says Guillermo Rosales, President, AMDA.

Despite this growth, AMDA’s sales forecast for May fell short by 1.4%, as the association had projected 121,623 units for the month. “We are going to have a general flattening in vehicle sales but, in terms of financing participation, I believe we have an opportunity to soften this decline with loan placements,” says Rosales.

The market dynamics are being reshaped by increased competition, particularly from new Chinese entrants. “There are many more suppliers, a much fiercer competition, new brands entering the market, and new brands arriving with their own financial arms. Additionally, national conditions and a past-due loan portfolio of less than 1% indicate market stability,” says Luis Brizuela, Commercial Director, Jato Dynamics.
