A Sneak Peek into Sustainable Plastic Packaging for ASEAN E-Commerce!
Publish Date: 2021/02/08
Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, it was predicted that the e-Commerce sector would be the fastest growing sector within ASEAN’s Internet economy, with 39% projected growth between 2015 and 2025. Amid the outbreak of COVID-19 and the lockdown of cities, the growth of e-commerce has been accelerated. According to a survey by  Google, Singapore's Temasek and consultancy firm Bain & Co , Southeast Asia will see a 63%  increase in e-commerce this year compared with 2019.

Challenges & Opportunities

The strong acceleration of e-commerce shipments lead to a huge surge in demand for plastic packaging. Thus, how to strike a balance between economic growth and environmental impact of plastic packaging? What shall the industries of plastics and packaging do and plan forwards to keep up with the current e-commerce boom? How do fast-moving-consumer-goods (FMCG) manufacturers and retailers respond to the new packaging trend?

Solution: Be Sustainable

Under the new normal, sustainability has become a key element of packaging and e-commerce industries. Not only ASEAN Member States impose new regulations to slash the usage of plastic packaging but also consumers see sustainability as more important gradually. It implies that demand of sustainable plastic packaging will become higher and higher, and stakeholder of e-commerce like packaging converters and consumer-goods manufacturers need to gear up to response accordingly.
