Chemical New Materials: Main Driving Force of Automotive Lightweight

New Material Application Development Conference and Seminar of China Alliance of Auto Non-metal materials (CAANMM) were held in Qingdao on November 21, 2019. Delegates agreed that plastics and other non-metallic materials hold great potential for promoting the development of automobiles lightening. Not only do they help reduce weight and increase energy efficiency during the production and lifecycle of a car, but also improve comfort to the car.

A large amount of non-metallic materials are already being used in the automotive industry across the U.S., Europe and Japan. This has been a global trend for vehicles, especially for electric cars. Domestically, chemical materials and their composite products have also been used in automotive lightweight. In 2018, the consumption of polypropylene plastic reached 4,880,000 tons, accounting for 46.5% of the domestic automotive plastic consumption. Nylon material was mostly used in automobile hood, radiator fan cover, inlet pipe, engine cover, radiator and battery tray, etc., with a dosage of 1,222,000 tons. ABS engineering plastics were used in the dashboard, grille, decoration, ceiling and car audio components of automotive interior, with a consumption of 650,000 tons.

Composite materials composed of synthetic resin, polyurethane, carbon fiber, fluorosilicate, glass fiber and other materials will be widely used to boost the development of new energy, intelligent network and other future automotive and related industries in future.

Carbon fiber composite material is expected to be the main line of lightweight materials for automotive structural parts, due to its low assembly link, the the industry feasibility for scale application, and a broad space for development. Assumed that the automobile production in 2020 would reach up to 23 million, each car weight approximately 1500 kg, and carbon fiber composites would have a penetration rate of 2%. At the same time assumed that the cost of carbon fiber materials was RMB 70 /kg, then the total demand of carbon fiber for automobiles in 2020 would be 690,000 tons, which was equivalent to RMB 48.3 billion.

The development of new energy vehicles also puts forward more requirements for fluorosilicone materials. Organic silicone rubber has good chemical resistance, insulation and heat resistance, which could ensure the safety and reliability of power transmission when used in high-voltage cables of new energy vehicles. Lithium batteries need to use a large number of high-end fluorine materials to improve the performance of related components and ensure safety. In high energy density batteries, diaphragms coated with polyvinylidene fluoride showed excellent chemical resistance to electrolytes while maintaining high flexibility.
