|5G licensing ceremony was held by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology on June 6, 2019, marking China's official acceleration into the era of 5G commercialization. 5G requires higher speed of electromagnetic wave transmission and less loss of signal propagation, which means that permittivity and dielectric loss of the applied material should be as small as possible. LCP meets all these stringent requirements.
The arrival of 5G era brings comprehensive changes to the technology industry, which not only affects 5G components, but also the application field, such as mobile phone antenna, FPC, etc., while corresponding membrane materials will also usher in development opportunities.
LCP antenna will replace PI antenna for high frequency and speed transmission
At present, polyimide (PI) antenna is used more, but with the advent of 5G era, because of its high permittivity and dielectric loss, low moisture absorption and reliability, PI antenna with serious loss of high frequency transmission and poor structural properties, has been unable to adapt to the current trend of high frequency and speed, especially used for more than 10 GHZ. However, LCP can almost maintain a constant permittivity in the whole RF range of 110GHz, and loss tangent is very small, so it is suitable for use at high frequency.
In 2017, iPhone X adopted a multi-layer LCP antenna for the first time. It uses two LCP antennas. IPhone 8 / 8 plus also uses an antenna module partially based on the LCP FPC.
LCP FPC saves space and helps to miniaturize smart phones
The flexibility of FPC is the key of miniaturization. LCP FPC has good flexibility and performance of high frequency and speed. Compared to traditional PI, it can withstand more bending times and smaller bend radius.
At the same time, LCP FPC has the same transmission loss as the antenna. It can carry a number of transmission lines and lead out multiple RF lines in the 3-layer structure of only 0.2mm, thus replacing the hypertrophic antenna and coaxial connector, reducing the thickness by 65% and improving space efficiency.
IPhone X uses four times as much LCP FPC as the iPhone 8 / 8 plus for its antenna, trunk line, and camera modules.
