Being the president, founder and councilor of European Medical Polymers Division of the Society of Plastics Engineers, Dr Austin is experienced in polymer materials and manufacturing engineering, consultation to pharmaceutical and medical devices. He is now a senior member of lecturing staff within the School of Engineering as well as the leader of Polymer Processing Technologies Group at WIT.
An ever-growing class of biomaterials - Hydrogels can be cross-linked and find use in diverse applications ranging from contact lenses to bone repair scaffolds to coatings for catheters. This talk will look at the methods of hydrogel manufacture, discuss the chemistry of how they work and use real life industrial applications to show how hydrogels have become a crucial class of material in the toolbox of the modern medical device manufacturer.
